Description

What is Soapstone?
Soapstone is a soft stone mined in Kenya.

History of Kenyan Soapstone Carvings

A tradition stretching several centuries, the Abagusii tribe (commonly referred to as the Kisii) in now western Kenya discovered soapstone in the Tabaka Hills, south-east of the Lake Victoria (Africa’s largest fresh water lake and the source of the Nile River).

Using techniques passed down from generation to generation, the entire process tends to be a family affair, as each step is carried out by hand. The first step is mining the soapstone by hand. Machinery cannot be used as the stone is too fragile.

Once mined, the stone is sorted, ensuring only the highest quality is used. The highly porous stone is immersed into water before exceptionally skilled artists begin to carve it. Through apprenticeship, master carvers are capable of transforming the stone into creations ranging from the very small to artwork weighing over a ton!

Once carved, the artifact is then smoothed by hand using sandpaper. It is then delivered to master painters who transform the creations into one-of-a-kind works of art. From painting geometric motifs to depicting wild animals in the world famous Maasai Mara, the painters imbue the carvings with a distinct soul.

While ancient artifacts were not painted, all carvings (including modern creations) are polished, bringing out hidden details of the stone.

Kisii Soapstone is a beautiful way to adorn your life with ancient African artwork.

How to Handle Soapstone
Please note that soapstone is very soft and malleable. Nicks and slight abrasions are a feature, not a flaw, that help preserve its uniqueness and create a vintage visage.
